Emission Spectra Lab

Today we conducted a lab to identify elements based on their spectral lines.

Homework:

  1. Do: Finish lab report
  2. Watch: Quantum Video
  3. Do: WSQ - Quantum

Light

Today we talked about light.

  1. EM Spectrum
  2. Speed = wavelength x frequency
  3. Energy of a photon
  4. Photoelectric effect
  5. Bohr model

We're going to be doing a lab over emission spectra next time.  Look over some material on that in preparation.

Homework:
I don't really have a video for tonight, but I think that you should use the time to do some extra practice.  For instance, Page 124 (10-14)

Atomic Models

Blog for A Block (9/24) and H Block (9/25).

Today we reviewed atomic models.

  1. Greeks
  2. Dalton
  3. Thomson
  4. Rutherford
    1. PhET simulation
  5. Neutrons
Sorry if it got a bit dull.  We'll try to spice it up next time.

Homework:
  1. Watch: Light
  2. Do: WSQ - Light

Archimedes Story

Don't worry about the Archimedes story.  The lab seems to have taken longer than I thought.  Focus on the lab.

Density Lab

Today:
  1. Density lab to discover the identity of unknown metals.
  2. Archimedes research
There is a test next time.  You have all weekend to study.

Homework:
  1. Finish lab report.  Make sure that you have all required sections.  No graph necessary.
  2. Study for the exam.  Here is a study guide.

Temperature conversions and mixtures

This is the blog for A Block (9/16) and H Block (9/17)

  1. Temperature conversions
  2. Types of mixtures
  3. We didn't actually talk about density, but we referenced it

There is a test next week.

Homework:
  1. Watch: Density Lab
  2. Do: WSQ - Density Lab
  3. Optional: You can start looking up things about Archimedes

Freezing/Melting Lab

We did a lab today.

If you didn't finish, don't worry.  Analyze the data that you have.

Homework:

  1. Do: Finish lab report.  Don't forget the post-lab questions.
  2. Watch: Mixtures video
  3. Do: WSQ - Mixtures

Phase Changes

Today we:

  1. Talked about phase changes
  2. Looked at a graph of temperature during a phase change
  3. Learned why we sweat
  4. Interpreted phase diagrams
  5. Froze stuff with liquid nitrogen (see more at the talk on Friday)
Homework:
  1. No video tonight.
  2. Read - Freezing/Melting lab
  3. Do: WSQ - Freezing/Melting lab
  4. Optional do: Start the lab report
  5. Don't forget the extra credit opportunity on Friday night

Properties of Matter

This blog is for classes held on 9/8 (A Block) and 9/9 (H Block).

We discussed properties of matter today:

  1. Extensive = change with amount (mass, volume, length, etc)
  2. Intensive = do not change with amount (color, smell, melting point, etc)
  3. There are many properties
Next time, we will have some liquid nitrogen.  If you have anything you want to see frozen, bring it in.

Homework:
  1. Watch: Phase Changes
  2. Do: WSQ - Phase Changes
  3. Finish: List of 10 extensive and 10 intensive properties for item that you chose

1st Exam

I'll have these graded and ready to go over next time.

We're ready to start a new unit!

Homework:

  1. Watch: Properties
  2. Answer: WSQ - Properties (Remember that homework is due at 8:20 in the morning)
  3. Bring: An object for chemistry show and tell.  You will be describing the item in a lot of detail.  Don't bring a precious family heirloom in case it gets destroyed.
