Unit 5 Exam

So, the exam is was not so great for many of you.  I ended up dropping the whole short answer section and providing additional extra credit.  Even still, many students did not pass the exam.

I am going to make corrections on this test mandatory for anyone who failed.  That should serve to bring your grades up.  More information presented next time in class.

Homework:

  1. Watch: Chemical Equations
  2. Do: WSQ - Equations

More practice

We practiced naming and drawing compounds.  You will need to do this for the test.

For the test, make sure you know:

  1. The difference between ionic, covalent, and metallic bonds.
  2. The difference between intermolecular and intramolecular forces.
  3. How to name and write ionic compounds
  4. How to name and write covalent and hydrocarbon compounds.
  5. How to draw Lewis dot structures.
  6. VSEPR Theory
  7. Polyatomic ions
    1. Hydroxide
    2. Ammonium
    3. Nitrate
    4. Nitrtie
    5. Phosphate
    6. Sulfate
    7. Carbonate
Please come see me if you have any questions.

Hydrocarbons

  1. They contain only carbon and hydrogen.
  2. Many carbons can be connected in a chain.
  3. Isomers have the same formula, but different structure and different properties.
  4. The naming rules are different.

Homework:
Practice naming and drawing compounds.  If you are good with ionic and covalent compounds, may I suggest hydrocarbons (like this website).

VSEPR

Great job cleaning today!  The lab looks great.

We talked about VSEPR structures.  Remember that geometries and shapes are 2 different things.

Homework:

  1. Watch: Organic
  2. Do: WSQ: Organic

Ionic/Covalent Lab

Today we did a lab to distinguish between an ionic and covalent compound.  If you did not finish the last part, make sure that you get the data from a classmate.

Homework:

  1. Finish lab report.
  2. Watch: VSEPR
  3. Do: WSQ: VSEPR

Metallic and Intermolecular Forces

We talked about:

  1. Metallic bonds
    1. Sea of electrons
    2. Alloys
  2. Intermolecular forces
    1. Dipole-dipole
    2. Dipole-induced dipole
    3. London dispersion forces

Next time, we will  do a lab to compare the proprties of covalent and ionic compounds.

Homework:
  1. Practice naming compounds.
  2. Look up some differences between ionic and covalent compounds.  Be prepared to discuss in class.

Ionic Bonds

Ionic bonds are different from covalent bonds.

  1. Metal and nonmetal
  2. Not sharing electrons
  3. Different naming rules
There's a lot of compound naming practice online.  Here's one set you might like to try.

Homework:
  1. Watch: Misc Bonding
  2. Do: WSQ: Misc

Covalent compounds

We talked about covalent compounds:

  1. 2 or more non-metals
  2. Why they form?
  3. How to draw them
  4. What to name them
